The HSE is urging people in at-risk groups to get vaccinated against the flu this winter.
People are also being warned that the flu virus can cause severe illness, and can also lead to death in some cases.
Vaccination is available from GPs and pharmacies, and is free-of-charge to holders of medical or a doctor-only cards.
The vaccination is free to all others, but an administration charge applies.
Dr Brenda Corcoran from the HSE National Immunisation Office explained who would be considered ‘at risk’.
“Flu vaccinations is strongly recommended for everybody who’s 65 or older,” she said.
“Those who are under 65 with a long-term medical condition such as diabetes or heart or lung disease, all pregnant women and also healthcare workers and carers of those in the at-rick groups.”
