The Road Safety Authority is warning motorists of dangerous driving conditions as parts of the country experiences heavy rain tonight and into tomorrow.

Met Éireann issued Status Orange Rainfall warning for Co Kerry this morning, stated that up to 100 mm of rain possible in mountainous areas.

A Status Yellow Rainfall warning is in effect for western parts of Galway, Mayo, Clare and Cork, warning of “30 to 50 mm of rain today, tonight and much of Tuesday with up to 70 mm possible in mountainous areas”.

Both weather warnings are in effect until 6pm tomorrow.

Met Éireann forecaster Liz Walsh said that Co Kerry has already experienced some heavy downpours.

“County Kerry is under a Status Orange warning, meaning that we’re expecting some heavy, heavy rainfall – like there has been already today – for much of tonight, and for Tuesday morning,” she said.

“And we are kind of expecting 100mm in mountainous areas.

“The latest figures show that we’ve had 72mm at Valentia since 12 midnight last night, up until seven o’clock this evening.”
