New laws to ban forced marriages in Ireland will be discussed at Cabinet today.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald will bring proposals to the weekly meeting.

Under the terms of the new laws it would be an offence to make someone marry when they had not given consent, or if consent was given under duress.

A new bill overhauling the area of domestic violence legislation is due to be published in the next two months.
