Taoiseach Enda Kenny is to bring a memo to Cabinet this morning on Brexit after a clear timeline for Britain’s exit from the EU was announced.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said that she wants to trigger Article 50 by March at the latest.

The Taoiseach has said Brexit will be one of the biggest challenges to ever face Ireland.

Issues with the North such as a hard border and the future of the peace process are of particular concern.

On that front, plans for an all-Ireland forum are still underway, with it likely to take place in early November, despite the reticence of Northern Ireland’s First Minister Arlene Foster.

The potential impact of Britain leaving the EU, and fears of a ‘hard Brexit’, have been felt on the currency markets, with the value of the pound tumbling.

Chairperson of the Joint Committee on European Affairs, Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae, said that Ireland may find it hard to appear high on the UK Government’s list of priorities during its Brexit negotiations.

“Many of them themselves, they are shaking in their boots at what they’re actually after doing, because in my own personal opinion I think they’ve shot themselves, not in one foot, but in both feet,” he said.

“But, having said that, their decision has been made and it is their decision.

“It is up to us to do our best to minimise any harmful effects. But indeed, like I’ve said, if there is anything positive that we can pull out of this, that is what we as politicians have to do.”
