The best form of defence is attack – a saying thoroughly proved by Athy Rugby Club this weekend, writes Stephen Barry.

With their opponents Wexford Wanderers pinning them within five metres of their own tryline, winger Jimmy Quinlan took matters into his own hands.

From the base of a defensive ruck, Quinlan picked and ran through the forest of bodies – and kept running…

Having zig-zagged past all but one member of the Wexford team, he offloaded to Mark Beever, who set up Davey Walsh for the try.

That score helped Athy eke out a 22-19 win in the Leinster League Division 2B game and was also given the honour of North Midlands try of the week…

We’d wager that it’s in the running for try of the year too!
