A dramatic change to the traffic system on the Liffey Quays in Dublin has been put forward by the city council.

It would see a continuous cycle path from Heuston Station to the docks, but private cars and lorries would be banned from Ellis and Arran quays.

Instead these vehicles would be diverted through Stoneybatter and Smithfield.

Director of Consumer Affairs at AA Ireland Conor Faughnan has mixed feelings on the issue: “This on the face of it is an ambitious idea; keep cyclists safe on the quays and you know most sensible people are in favour of that.

“But why would you throw a really distant illogical rope around it in order to lasso private cars.”
