€6m is being spent on flood relief works for Athlone.

The Office of Public Works says the scheme has been advanced due to the scale of flooding experienced in the town last winter.

The works are expected to commence in mid-2017, and when completed the project will provide protection to approximately 250 homes.

The OPW has also agreed to fund some advance interim remedial works in the town at Canal Walk and Griffith Street, which will be completed this year.
