Update 1.15pm: One of the arrested men was wearing full body armour.
It is part of an ongoing investigation by the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and the men are understood to be significant players in the criminal world.
It is understood the cash in transit van was carrying more than €200,000.
Superintendent Tony Howard said the three men were prepared for an altercation with An Garda Siochana: “I can also confirm during the course of the operation, that at least one of these individuals was wearing full body armour.
“They were heavily disguised in terms of clothing and other items.”
Earlier: Three men have been arrested in a foiled cash in transit robbery in Co Meath writes Roisin Burke.
The attempted robbery was interrupted by armed garda detectives.
The arrests were made as part a Garda operation led by the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.
It is reported the incident took place outside a bank in Dunboyne.

A firearm was also recovered by the garda operation.
The three men are in their 30s and are being detained at Blanchardstown and Finglas Garda Stations.
A media briefing will be held at 12.30pm.
