The Great British Bake Off quarter-finals are upon us, and – for the first time ever – the bakers will have to face the wrath of Tudor Week.

This means the five remaining contestants have to cook recipes from 500 years ago, such as water crust pastry pies stuffed with meats and other juicy fillings.

For many fans of Bake Off watching at home, it was a welcome addition to the BBC programme’s regular roll-call of themes, such as Cake Week, Biscuit Week, Pastry Week and, of course, Bread Week.

But for others, it was more a ‘what the…?’ moment.

Plenty saw a chance to make some ‘bet the loser this week gets beheaded’ gags.

Of course, other jokes were welcome…

And some fans just saw it as an opportunity to eat pork pies while watching the episode.

Yum. What would Henry VIII have thought of all this?
