Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted that her dad had to warn her she was becoming “an asshole” at the height of her fame.
The Hollywood actress racked up some top notch movie roles – and an Academy Award – in her 20s and had started to believe the buzz around her.
But she told Harper’s Bazaar that her father, late director and producer Bruce Paltrow, set her straight.
Asked if anyone had ever said anything to her that was “a complete game changer”, Gwyneth replied: “I remember when I was maybe 27 years old and kind of at the height of my movie stardom – it was around the time of the Oscar and this and that.
“I think I was very much believing my own hype, which how could you not?
“I was sitting with my dad, feeling great about my life and everything that was happening, and he was like, ‘You know, you’re getting a little weird… You’re kind of an asshole’.
“And I was like, ‘What the hell?’ I was totally devastated.”
However, the Iron Man star said her dad’s wise words ended up being the “best thing that ever happened to me”.
Gwyneth, 44, said: “It’s the difference between someone who loves you more than anything in the world giving you criticism and getting it from some bitter stranger on the internet.
“What my dad said to me was the kind of criticism where I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I’m on the wrong track’.”
Gwynnie also opened up about her famous friend Beyonce in the revealing interview, saying that the chart-topper was nothing like her persona in real life.
She said: “Some really famous people, even when they’re off-duty, have this energy that is sort of overpowering. She does not have that.
“She is so dialled down. She’s the sweetest mother. She’s very shy. You would not believe she is Beyonce Knowles. You would be like, ‘No, that was not her’.”
Gwyneth said even she forgets that her pal is the superstar Beyonce, and that she suddenly remembers when she sees the Lemonade singer on stage.
She confessed: “I’m like, ‘Oh, shit, I forgot’.”
