People Before Profit has said that the Government is not listening to women who want to have their say on abortion in Ireland.

The party is holding a rally at the Spire in Dublin this afternoon, ahead of Tuesday’s debate on their Bill calling for a referendum on repealing the 8th Amendment.

People Before Profit say they have organised today’s event to build support for the Bill, and to show the government that people are tired of waiting to have their say.

TD Bríd Smith says the government is just trying to placate people by holding a Citizens’ Assembly, which is due to discuss the issue next month.

“Every time we raise it the Dáil, we’re being told: ‘Hold your horses, there’s a Citizen’s Assembly coming up’,” she said.

“Well we don’t accept that that’s either valid or good enough, and we want to make that point that we did have a citizen’s assembly at the end of February, it was called a General Election, and there were over 70 TDs in that citizen’s assembly who committed to pushing for a referendum to repeal the 8th.”
