The public are being encouraged to get trained in CPR and how to recognise cardiac arrest this CPR Awareness Week.

The Order of Malta is holding training events and information seminars around the country, including showing people how to use a defibrillator.

The initiative is now in its second year – it was established after a volunteer’s son died from sudden cardiac death last year.

Deputy director Brian Coote says even people with basic knowledge of cardiac arrest and CPR can help save a life.

“If somebody is unresponsive in any situation, what’s really important is that you get help immediately,

“Dial 999 or 112, ask for help and then listen to the instructions that you’re given by the controller on the phone.

“And really what we’re saying is that if someone’s unresponsive, it’s important to start CPR really quickly, even if that just means pressing on the chest, hard and fast – keep doing that until help gets to you, and help will get there as soon as possible.”
