Fianna Fáil has again said it is against the government’s help-to-buy scheme, but won’t bring the government down over it.

Instead the party says it will work to make changes to the scheme at committee stage.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan introduced the Finance Bill in the Dáil tonight, but did not signal any changes to the scheme.

But Fianna Fáil’s Michael McGrath says they do want alterations: “Fianna Fáil does not believe that this help-to-buy scheme is the right policy at this time.

We’re not going to bring down the government on the issue but we will engage in some of the key issues at committee stage.

We remain of the view that the €600,000 threshold is exceptionally high and does not properly target limited taxpayer resources.”
