The house at The Villas, Clonroche, where an elderly man lost his life this morning.

The man in his seventies who died in a fire at his home in Clonroche yesterday morning (Wednesday) has been named as Bobby Rochford.

Mr Rochford was a well-known and popular local man who lived all his life in the house at The Villas housing estate in the village.

The alarm was raised around 9.15 am when a neighbour noticed a man at a window calling for help from inside his home.

Efforts to save Mr Rochford failed and his house was extensively destroyed.
