People are being warned to stay a safe distance from bonfires and fireworks.

Dublin City Fire Brigade says sparks can cause permanent injuries and scars.

Halloween is traditionally associated with bonfires which can often be dangerous and get out of control.

A spokesperson for Dublin Fire Brigade said: “Bonfires and fireworks can cause a lot of injuries and damage.

“Stay a safe distance from bonfires and fireworks. Wind can carry sparks and can cause permanent injuries.

“Keep pets indoors and don’t leave material lying around that can be taken to a bonfire. Escort your children out and keep dangerous substances like oil and petrol away from fireworks and bonfires. We would also ask people to respect all the emergency services,” they told the Irish Independent.

Patrick Fleming, a Chief Fire Officer, is asking that people be respectful of the emergency services.

Mr Fleming said: “Across the board we’d say that the fire service, both in the Ambulance Service and the in Fire Services that we provide, are here to help people in their hour of need.

“If a fire fighter gets injured or if equipment gets damaged, then that impairs us in responding to the public and giving them the service that they need.

“So we would ask parents in particular to be responsible with respect to their children and realise thet the fire service are there for their own good. We don’t want to be killjoys, but it is there for the community good.”
