THE MUSICAL stars of Wexford’s Oyster Lane Theatre Group shone brightly from the stage of the Dun Mhuire theatre for a stomping run of feel-good modern musical Legally Blonde.
One-time West End star Sharon Clancy wowed in the role of Elle Woods, who defied the odds to graduate from Harvard law school despite previously being regarded as a dim-witted fashionista.
Hometown performer Gearóid McCauley won the affections of both audience members and Elle alike as lovable lawyer and leading male Emmett.
Meanwhile, Oyster Lane newcomer Tom Joyce, who excelled as Warner, was the original impetus for Ms. Clancy’s character becoming ‘Legally Blonde’ yet ultimately lost his girl.
The musical adaptation of the 2001 megahit movie starring Reese Witherspoon has been performed on Broadway over 600 times since it was first premiered in 2007.
With an up-tempo score, delivered live with aplomb under the leadership of AIMS award-winning Musical Director Patrick Clancy, this Wexford version had young and old alike singing and dancing along in their seats to numbers such as ‘Omigod You Guys’, ‘What You Want’ and ‘Bend and Snap’.
An undoubted highlight of the night, however, arrived when Wexford entertainers Dylan Walsh, as Carlos and Mick Farrell, as Nikos, led the cast and the audience too in a rousing rendition of the tongue-in-cheek tune ‘Gay or European?’
The town’s inimitable and award-winning Suzanne O’Leary directed and choreographed this year’s masterpiece.
