YOUNG AND old alike rang in the 65th annual Wexford Festival Opera in splendid style on Wednesday night last, when vibrant, colourful, fireworks illuminated skies over the Slaney.

An eclectic soundtrack of dramatic opera pieces and modern smash-hit tracks set off the spectacular show and seemed to symbolise the town’s special culture of embracing opera and all forms of art in everyday moments and activities throughout this magical festive time.

The majestic Spiegeltent and adjacent fairground attractions shone brightly on the quayfront, as though a reminder of the significant both social and economic benefits the unique festival has brought to Wexford town since 1951.

Recalling stories of opening nights past and making memories anew, families had been beckoned to the woodenworks past Wexford’s iconic Bullring, where vibrant samba drumming group Bloco Garman enhanced the night’s festive offerings.

It was a mild night full of wonder and hope, when thousands of mystified children looked skywards at the cleverly-choreographed concoction of colour exploding above.
