Investigations are continuing into the deaths of an elderly couple in County Mayo.

The remains of Tom Fitzgerald, who was in his 70s and his wife Kitty, who was aged in her 60s, were discovered at their home in Irishtown.

Emergency services attended the scene yesterday afternoon, and the couple was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man in his 30s, who was also found injured at the scene, was taken to University College Hospital Galway for treatment.

Postmortems are expected to take place tomorrow on the bodies.

Michael Commins, a reporter with the Mayo News, says the community is in shock.

He said: “I was up in the village last night, a village I know very well from covering it for years and I would be associated with the local GAA club up there.

“Everywhere you go, it’s a very quiet area, and nothing like this has ever happened.”

Local parish priest Father Martin O’Connor told Midwest Radio the community is stunned.

Fr O’Connor said: “We all have very happy memories of our friendship with them, they are a huge loss to our community.

“To be honest now, I’m only just trying to find words myself, I feel it very much in my own heart their loss.”
