Angela Scanlon has been announced as the new host of BBC’s The One Show.

The current presenter, Alex Jones is expected to take maternity leave from The One Show in January as she prepares to welcome her first child with husband Charlie Thomson.

Angela will be joined by BBC journalist Michelle Ackerley.

Michelle Ackerley (left) and Angela Scanlon are to cover Alex Jones’ maternity leave on The One Show (BBC)

Michelle will take over presenting duties on Mondays and Tuesdays while Angela will cover Thursdays and Fridays, and they will alternate for the longer Wednesday episode.

Both have worked on The One Show previously, producing and presenting films, and the programme’s editor Sandy Smith believes they will be a natural fit for the job.

Sandy said: “Angela and Michelle have already made a big impact with the audience and The One Show team both will bring something fresh until Alex returns.”

Michelle said she is “absolutely thrilled” to be joining the team and that it’s a “privilege” to fill Alex’s shoes.

Angela said: “”I’m over the moon to get the chance to present one of my favourite shows on TV and I’m thrilled to be looking after Alex’s spot on the green sofa while she is away. I have always been a massive fan of The One Show and love being part of that wonderful family, so I really can’t wait to get started.”

The Meath native took to Twitter to announce the happy news today.

Angela is also the co-host of BBC Two’s Robot Wars alongside our very own Dara O’Briain.

She also presents a show on Virgin Radio.
