The Garda Commissioner has been accused of making empty threats over tomorrow’s possible strike.

Noirin O’Sullivan has told officers to report for work in the morning, or face disciplinary action.

There is less than 24-hours to go before 12,500 members of the force walk off the job in their row over pay.

The Labour Court has been holding last minute hearings to find a solution – but there is no progress so far.

Even if the strike goes ahead, employment law professor Michael Doherty thinks there is too many people to punish: “You can’t pick out two or three people and make an example of them, that is just not permissible because then you are treating people in an unfair manner.

“So to go through the process of disciplining all the Gardaí if everybody doesn’t show up, it is an empty threat.”
