Benedict Cumberbatch proved his knack for comedy as he hosted long-running US sketch show Saturday Night Live.
The Sherlock star, who is promoting his superhero film Doctor Strange, was quick to joke about the bitter US election in his opening monologue.
“So nice to be hosting on the last week of America as we know it,” he said.
Benedict, 40, suggested Americans could copy the British method of dealing with a tense situation.
“We drink. We drink so much,” he said.
The Oscar-nominee offered a Barry White-style song to introduce himself to the audience, while also revealing his true feelings about the term for his fans – “Cumberbitches”.

Among his sketches, Benedict appeared in a fake advert for the “Koohl Toilet by Kohler” and took part in a quiz called “why is Benedict Cumberbatch hot?”

He also played a male lap dancer dressed as a construction worker and a rock’n’roll magician on a doomed double date.
The show included another outing of Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump character and Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton.
The end of the sketch saw the actors break character as they walked through the streets of New York hand-in-hand.

Kate and Alec then gathered in front of the live studio audience to encourage viewers to vote.
“We won’t tell you who to vote for,” Kate said. “But on Tuesday, we all get to choose what kind of country we want to live in.”
Following the Chicago Cubs’ historic baseball world series win – which ended a 108-year wait for the title – celebrity fan and former SNL star Bill Murray appeared on the show with players Anthony Rizzo, Dexter Fowler and David Ross.
