The film, which opened internationally last weekend, was one of a strong batch of new movies which drew audiences to cinemas in large numbers in America this weekend, including Trolls and Mel Gibson’s WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge.

Trolls, an animated musical featuring the voices of Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, took second place with $45.6 million (£36.4 million).

Hacksaw Ridge, which is about the true story of Desmond Doss’s heroics during the battle of Okinawa, earned $14.8 million (£11.8 million).
