A man has been handed a life sentence for murdering a fellow inmate at Cork prison last year.

Brian Veale, who is originally from Dungarvan in Co. Waterford, stabbed Graham Johnson following a row over what to watch on TV.

It only took the jury two-and-a-half hours to find Brian Veale guilty of murder at the end of last month.

He and 41-year-old Graham Johnson were inmates of Cork prison when a row broke out over what to watch on the TV in the kitchen area on May 16, 2015.

A few hours later, Veale stabbed the father-of-three in the chest with a large knife. A prison officer said he appeared “relatively calm” as his victim lay dying on the kitchen floor.

Graham Johnson’s sister Vivienne read out a Victim Impact Statement on behalf of their 87-year-old mother Theresa.

She said it breaks her heart everyday thinking of how and why he is not here anymore and said she will never understand or forgive Brian Veale for his actions on that dreadful day.

Veale was then handed the mandatory life sentence for murder.
