An independent TD has raised how a review of Garda whistleblowing allegations can conclude without any contact with the whistleblowers.
Former High Court Judge Iarfhlaith O’Neill was apointed to review allegations from two senior officers that some Gardai orchestrated a smear campaign against another whistleblower.
A report from the review is to be furnished to the Justice Minister next week.
Deputy Clare Daly’s told the Dáil she can’t see how this review will uncover anything if it doesn’t even interview the whistleblowers: “The former judge has not requested any information from any of the two whistleblowers, he hasn’t met either man, he hasn’t even spoken to either man.
“In fact the only interaction was about two weeks ago was a request from their legal teams to pass on the protected disclosure to the Garda Commissioner, you couldn’t make this up, what kind of an inquiry do you honestly expect us to believe this is?”
