Miles Davis’s album Kind Of Blue has topped a list of the the best jazz albums of all time.

The American trumpeter’s record beat John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme and Charles Mingus’s Ah Um for the number one spot in a countdown of the 50 greatest jazz albums airing on the BBC Music Jazz “pop up” radio station.

The ranking of the albums was voted for by members of the jazz community and BBC Radio 3′s Geoffrey Smith. Jazz FM’s Helen Mayhew will present the countdown over the weekend with the winner revealed during Sunday’s programme.

Miles Davis’s record On the Corner took the fifth spot on the list, while his In a Silent Way was named number seven, Bitches Brew was 11 and Sketches of Spain was 44.

Geoffrey said: “Miles Davis rules the 50 Greatest Jazz Albums with three in the top 10, crowned at number one by Kind of Blue, the album for every mood and taste. And for every listener – the one jazz album you’re bound to have if you just love music and Miles at their best.”

Helen added: “Kind of Blue is the ‘Greatest Album’ because it is the greatest album. It’s a landmark album and the best-selling jazz album of all time for a reason.

“It’s the album most people have in their music collection and if you haven’t got it, then you have to get it because it’s the best.”

The BBC Music Jazz pop-up, a collaboration between BBC Music, BBC Radio and Jazz FM is broadcasting 24 hours a day over five days.

The pop-up features all-star presenters and musicians, archive gems and jazz music for everyone from novices to connoisseurs.

It will run until 10am on November 14 on digital radio, online and the iPlayer Radio app.
