Strictly Come Dancing star Ore Oduba has revealed his first wedding anniversary celebration was interrupted by a phone call from his mother criticising his dance moves.

Oduba, who survived the dance-off last Sunday, took a trip to the View From The Shard in London to celebrate his first anniversary with wife Portia earlier this week.

However, their time together was interrupted by his mother Fola giving him feedback on the salsa he performed with professional partner Joanne Clifton, when he was criticised by the judges for his hip movements.

He said: “We were at the View From the Shard for our anniversary, sharing this day and this last year and my phone rang and it was my mum telling me: ‘That figure of eight was why you were in the dance-off, you need to work on it’.”

He added: “It’s her way of supporting me. She loves watching the show but if she hears something from the judges she re-enforces it to me like I wasn’t there.”

The BBC Sport presenter said the newlyweds have spent a great deal of time apart because he started the dance show so soon after working on the 2016 Olympics in Rio – but has promised that will soon change.

He said: “Our honeymoon was the last holiday we had, although we have a had a couple of days in Europe since then.

“I have promised her a trip away as soon as this adventure is over.

“Our anniversary celebration was only two hours long but that was all we could fit in the schedule!”

Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One at 7.15pm.
