The crew of the LÉ Samuel Beckett has rescued 40 people off the coast of Tripoli.

The Irish naval vessel is in the Mediterranean as part of efforts to deal with the numbers of people using the waterway as they flee war torn countries.

The rescue operation began at 11 o’clock this morning and all migrants were safely on board by half past one.

They are now being brought to shore.
