A man has gone on trial accused of the murder of a 39-year-old man who was stabbed outside a chip shop in Dublin.

Donal Colgan, of Killarney Court, Killarney Street, Dublin 1, denies murdering David Sheridan on August 17, 2014.

On the day in question, the deceased man met a friend and bought some beer at an off-licence and later went to a chip shop called Luigi’s near the Five Lamps on the North Strand Road in Dublin city.

The jury heard there were a number of people there at the time and that Mr Sheridan’s friend went outside while he remained inside.

A short time later, Donal Colgan left the fast food restaurant. A row broke out and some of the customers, including Mr Sheridan, went outside.

Afterwards, the accused left the scene with his food and his alleged victim went back inside.

It is the prosecution’s case that Mr Colgan returned to the chip shop with a knife which he allegedly used to repeatedly stab Mr Sheridan, who died from his injuries the following day.

Some clothes and a block of knives were seized from Mr Colgan’s home when he was arrested on August 19, 2014.

He denies the charge.
