The Minister with responsibility for flood relief has said 89% of houses which were flooded in areas where permanent flood defences have been put in place, have been reinsured.

Sean Canney (pictured) said he was in discussions with insurance companies to ensure more properties can be insured.

But he said insurers need to do more to help flood victims.

He said his department was developing a protocol with Insurance Ireland so that insurance would be possible for people whose homes had been flooded in the past.
