Terry Wogan was honoured during the live broadcast as a montage of his best moments from Children In Need was aired during the Live Appeal Show as Graham Norton and Ade Adepitan took over the presenting duties from Tess Daly and Greg James.

Sir Terry passed away in January this year after a battle with cancer: this is the first Children In Need show since his death.

Clips included the TV veteran dancing on the Strictly dance floor, acting as the time lord, presenting opposite Fearne Cotton and performing with Madonna.

Sir Terry’s son Mark appeared on stage to give out the very first Sir Terry Wogan Fundraiser of the Year Award, a new prize set up in the late presenter’s honour.

Mark told the audience: “It was his favourite night of the year, mainly because the money raised tonight and through the year actually made a difference to people, that’s why he loved it.”

He shared his thanks for tributes he and his family received following his father’s death earlier this year.

Mark went on to speak of the new award, set up to remember Sir Terry’s legacy.

He said: “It is about people who have gone above and beyond for charity, who have raised not necessarily enormous amounts, but who showed determination and creativity and people who inspire other people to do great things.”

The first recipient of the prize was Lauchlan Muir from West Lothian, Scotland, a youngster who raises money by acting as a human statue.

Muir said he only found out he was the winner that morning when his brothers woke him with confetti cannons.

Mark said: “Dad always said Children In Need was the thing he was most proud of in his entire career. He said he was just one player in a massive team and that you at home were the real stars.

“It was always about helping the children, for him.”
