A motorcyclist, clocked by Gardai traveling at 218km per hour, has received a fine, after admitting a charge of driving carelessly, writes David Raleigh.

James Keane, (32), with an address at Glashnacree, Lyreacrompane, Listowel, Co Kerry, was convicted of careless driving, Tuesday, at Newcastle West District Court.

Mr Keane was recorded doing 98km per hour over the speed limit on a stretch of the M20 at Cloghacloka, Patrickswell, Co Limerick.

Gardai had been conducting roadside speed checks when Mr Keane’s motorcycle was recorded travelling travelling 218km per hour at 4.33pm on October 9th this year.

He was arrested by Gardai on the M20 and subsequently conveyed to Henry Street Garda Station, Limerick city, where he was charged under the road traffic act and released on bail.

Sentencing in a case of careless driving does not carry a mandatory driving ban.

Mr Keane’s solicitor told the court his client had no previous convictions, and that he had not intended nor realised he had been traveling at such a speed.

Judge Mary Larkin fined Mr Keane €550.
