A new two-part documentary with journalist Paul Williams is to assess the war on crime that has been ongoing since the death of Veronica Guerin 20 years ago.

The documentary, which will be aired on TV3 on Monday 28 November and Tuesday 29 November at 10pm, carries a number of highly emotional scenes from revisiting the place where Veronica Guerin was murdered, exactly 20 years on from time of her death and confronting John Gilligan on Jessbrook estate in Co Kildare where he now lives with his daughter Tracy.

Twenty years on from the death of Veronica Guerin, Gardaí are still being murdered by criminal gangs, journalists’ lives are being threatened, while on the streets of Dublin, gangsters kill each other with no fear of law and order.

Paul also takes the time to talk to the people who knew Veronica to see what they think about the Criminal Assets Bureau, the spate of murders on the streets of Dublin and the ‘crackdown’ that occurred in the aftermath of her death.

For Jimmy Guerin, the brother of the late Veronica, someone must be held accountable: “If you take what has gone on in Dublin between January and Veronica’s anniversary [26th June 2016], of that six months alone, the amount of murders that have been carried out, the amount of targets that were successfully hunted down by the Kinahan gang and shot, whilst the Gardaí were aware their lives were under threat.

“Now, if the guards knew and failed to protect them, well then the Garda Commissioner should be held accountable. And if the Garda Commissioner says she doesn’t have the resources, well then the Minister should be held accountable. But one of them has failed society.”
