A new Parent and Student charter in the country’s schools is being unveiled in proposed new laws.

It will give parents more of a say in how schools are run, including some of the spending involved.

However it looks like secondary students will not now get seats on the board of management.

Minister Richard Bruton says he wants to make the system more transparent: “This moves away from what was a very old fashioned reactive and very legalistic centralised system to making sure that you devolve to local level a culture of dealing with local issues and I think that everyone would acknowledge that this is the right direction to go in.”
