The weekend’s Premier League fun began even before a ball had been kicked – and it’s all to do with Watford v Everton’s excellent trending hashtag.

Shrewd members of the public will have noticed the format for Premier League games’ hashtags on Twitter, with three letters from the name of each side.

This means words were bound to be made at some point – and the excitement for Saturday’s first kick-off was something to behold.

Okay maybe excitement is a little strong – but whatever.

Some thought the sheer brilliance of the hashtag was no coincidence – as the fixture between the Hornets and the Toffees maybe didn’t promise to be a classic.

Although others thought it wasn’t just his game the hashtag was applicable to…

Unfortunately for media and sports outlets, the hashtag did read a little bit like it was undermining what they were trying to say too…

And ultimately, anything could have happened in this game – but we know what the reaction would have been.
