Emergency services are currently dealing with a massive fire at a warehouse on the south quay in Arklow.

It is not known how the fire started or if anyone was in the building at the time.

People have been advised to stay well clear of the area and keep their windows closed.

GardaĆ have confirmed that the building, which is the second biggest in the town, is constructed of asbestos which poses a serious health risk.

It is understood that GardaĆ called to a local secondary school in the area warning students to remain indoors and keep windows closed at all times.

The fire broke out shortly after 10am this morning and the smoke was seen billowing over the town.

A local worker reported hearing a loud explosion before the fire broke out.

He said: “I heard a loud bang and then noticed the smoke rising. Quickly the warehouse was like an inferno.”

A local garda, speaking anonymously, said that the fire could pose a serious health risk due to the fact that the factory is constructed of asbestos.
