A LACK of available housing stock for large families was a concern raised by Independent Cllr. Ger Carthy at a recent meeting of Wexford Borough District Council.

Cllr. Carthy stated that families who found themselves without a home were being split up and sent to stay at Wexford Women’s Refuge or at Ozanam House men’s hostel when this “shouldn’t be the solution.”

Director of Services at Wexford County Council, Tony Larkin, responded by outlining that there was a move towards constructing rather than purchasing houses to add to the supply.

“If we are aware of a family with a specific issue, we look at specific solutions.

“There is a housing crisis… is there someone suggesting that the officials in the housing department are not doing their jobs properly?”

Councillors from across the political spectrum responded by stating that stating this was not their intention.

Mr. Larkin, who previously served as Director of Housing, stated that “I think anyone in housing would know that splitting families is the last resort.”
