People throughout New Ross are in shock following the arrest of Tina Cahill in connection with the death in Sydney of her fiance, David Walsh, from Enniscorthy.

NEW ROSS woman, Tina Cahill, has been remanded in custody in Australia until April in relation to the fatal stabbing of her fiance at the couple’s home in a suburb of Sydney two weeks ago.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, February 19, when David ‘Motcha’ Walsh, from Enniscorthy, died following a fracas at the couple’s home in Padstow.

According to neighbours a fight broke out between a number of people at the house shortly after midnight that Friday – into Saturday morning.

Mr. Walsh, a father-of-three, ended up on the footpath outside the house with a stab wound to the neck and while paramedics treated him at the scene he succumbed to his injuries.

Ms. Cahill was subsequently charged with his murder and a 36 year-old local man was also arrested in connection with the incident, however, he was later released from custody without charge.

Ms. Cahill was originally due before the courts the following Sunday but was too distraught to appear or give evidence by video link.

The case was adjourned to last Wednesday, however, Ms. Cahill was again too distressed to appear and was remanded in custody, in her absence, until April 5 when it’s expected a book of evidence will be presented to the court.

Ms. Cahill’s sister, Mairead, said the difficulty of the situation was compounded by the distance between her sister and her family but the Cahill’s have been buoyed by the level of support they have received from friends and neighbours in New Ross.

“We’re not getting much information but people here have been very supportive,” she said.

Earlier in the week Ms. Cahill’s father, Dan, told the national media of his heartbreak at hearing his daughter’s voice on the phone and how she was ‘hardly able to speak’ and that he could ‘feel her pain’.

Speaking yesterday Mr. Cahill said he and his family had heard no more news from Australia but, like Mairead, said the distance involved is compounding the situation.

He complimented the community in New Ross which he said has been very supportive to him and his family.

“People here have been great and we thank them for that,” he said.

Ms. Cahill has been living in Australia for over four years and her and Mr. Walsh only announced their engagement shortly after Christmas.
