Cadets and Senior members of the Wexford Unit of the Order of Malta with their fleet

‘A SECOND family’ is how Cadet Leader with the Wexford Unit of the Order of Malta, Kelly Dempsey, describes the team she leads.

While glowing with praise for those with whom she volunteers, the local woman deserves to take some credit for her own part in operations too.

In recent months, the prestigious title of ‘Best Unit in Ireland’ was bestowed upon the community group which has been serving the people of the locality for 75 years.

Wexford’s is the biggest Order of Malta Unit in the South-East of the country.

The Unit presents the ‘Oliver Sinnott Award for Excellence’ to an outstanding member each year, but decided a slight break from tradition in 2017 was warranted to celebrate the commitment of the cadet leaders.

Dylan O’Connor, Laurynas Matuzas, Caitlin O’Grady, Anthony O’Grady, Pam Dore, Kahmen Bradley and Kelly Dempsey jointly received the award which commemorates a former Cadet and Senior.

Together, the leaders teach the next generation of Wexford lifesavers theory and practical skills in a fun and friendly setting.

Children who may not be enthused by sports or other, perhaps more traditional, pursuits, find kindred spirits at the base at St. John’s Drive, Westlands.

Senior members acknowledge the significance of Cadets and all work together for the benefit of the community.

The Unit provides First Aid cover at events taking place across the area spanning from Wexford Racecourse meetings to GAA matches to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and more.

Whatever the event at which they are volunteering, the Unit members are professional, personable and passionate about their roles.

Three road ambulances, an off-road ambulance, a car and bikes are available to assist the Unit in providing First Aid for people in Wexford.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the community voluntary organisation is invited to check out ‘Order of Malta Wexford Unit’ on Facebook or call 086 851 3578.

Here’s to the next 75 years of the award-winning Wexford Unit of the Order of Malta!
