RNLI and Coast Guard volunteers were accidentally alerted by a competing yacht

VOLUNTEERS WITH Rosslare Harbour RNLI and the Irish Coast Guard once again sprang to make a speedy response when an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon distress signal was issued off the south Wexford coast.

The lifeboat crew immediately launched just before midday last Tuesday, May 16th, after being alerted by the Irish Coast Guard to the alarm which usually indicates a vessel in serious danger.

The signal was traced to a location close to Carnsore Point, where an 18m yacht was competing in the Normandy Challenge yacht race.

The RNLI Lifeboat and Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 117 were quick to the scene, however it soon became apparent that the yacht was not in trouble and that the alarm had been activated accidentally.
