A LOCAL businessman has beaten off strong competition to become the proud new owner of one of Wexford town’s most successful pubs.
Anthony Doyle, of Doyle’s Londis, Coolcotts, said he was “absolutely delighted” to have purchased Maggie May’s pub, Monck Street, following an auction facilitated by Dolores Power at the Talbot Hotel last week.
The premises was sold by private treaty following the auction and is believed to have sold for in excess of the guide price of between €1.3m and €1.5m.
Maggie May’s generated widespread interest as soon as it was put up for auction on the instructions of its owner, who was retiring.
One of the finest licensed premises in the area to come to the market for many years, the pub was in turnkey condition on the day it was purchased by Mr. Doyle.
It is understood that at least one other Wexford businessperson had endeavoured to purchase the premises.
