Queing for tickets at Wexford Park. Pic: John Walsh

THE AREA around Wexford Park was awash with activity on Wednesday morning last, as a limited number of tickets were put on sale at 9am for this Saturday’s Leinster Senior Hurling Championship semi-final clash with Kilkenny.

In scenes which haven’t been seen in Wexford GAA circles for some time, over a thousand people thronged the Corish Park area from early morning.

Not everyone was swept away with excitement, however,

Many were disappointed to learn that, after queuing for two hours or longer, they would not be able to secure a seat for the game as covered and open stand tickets had sold out.

Others, including several residents in the area, took to social media to voice their frustration and concern with the way the tickets had been released and the chaos which had ensued in the area on the morning.

The Chairman of Wexford GAA County Board, Derek Kent expressed his apologies to people in the local area and said that lessons had been learned from the ticket rush.

We are genuinely sorry for the inconvenience caused in the local area around Wexford Park – we did not set out to cause trouble for people. The situation with ticket sales was new to us – it’s the first time we’ve ever had that level of demand and a 100% sell-out, and that’s a new learning curve.”
