Fianna Fail’s Cllr Joe Sullivan was elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Gorey Municipal District Council, replacing his party colleague, Cllr Pip Breen, when the annual general meeting took place on Tuesday in the Civic Buildings.
Cllr Sullivan, first elected when the Municipal Council’s were established three years ago, was proposed by Cllr Malcolm Byrne and seconded by Cllr John Hegarty.
Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleahbáin proposed Cllr Mary Farrell; Cllr Robbie Ireton seconded; but Cllr Farrell failed to get enough support and Cllr Sullivan was elected by 5 votes to 3.
The position of Leas-Cathaoirleach went to Cllr Anthony Donohoe, (Fine Gael), proposed by Cllr Hegarty and seconded by Cllr Byrne.
