Two residents at The Chase Imelda Conway and Noreen Kennedy refused to allow construction workers to install water meters at their homes during a protest at the Coolcotts housing estate last Tuesday morning.

The protest was organised by the Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes in a bid to highlight the possible health implications arising from the installation of smart water meters.

Irish Water, however, claim that the meters being installed are in fact at Automatic Meter Reading meters, which operate on a much lower frequency, are being installed.

But spokesperson for the CAHWT Deirdre Wadding has slated these claims.

“They are attempting to give off the impression that these are not smart meters, but we are not convinced. We believe that they are using smart meters”, she said.

Last Tuesday the group staged a demonstration in a bid to “inform householders of the health implications” arising from the installation of smart meters.

The group claims that smart meters can cause nausea, insomnia and in some cases have been linked with leukaemia.
