
Plaque unveiled at Enniscorthy to mark the 150th anniversary of the railway.
Celebrations are taking place in Enniscorthy today to mark the 150th anniversary of the first train to arrive in the town.
A plaque commemorating the historic event was unveiled at Enniscorthy Railway Station by the Chairman of the Town Council, Cllr. Johnny Mythen, who described the occasion as “a very important and historic day for the town.”
The plaque is sponsored jointly by Iarnróid Éireann and Enniscorthy Town Council.
Government Chief Whip, Paul Kehoe TD, also addressed the large attendance who turned out to mark the occasion.
Iarnróid Éireann was represented by David Murphy, Station Master, and Jane Cregan, PR Manager.
Enniscorthy has nine train services a day.
Oliver Doyle gave a brief account of the history of the former Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford rail network.
Passenger traffic used the 34.75 miles of track from Avoca to Enniscorthy for the first time on November 16th 1863.
