Update 1pm: The Department of Foreign Affairs has said consular assistance is being provided to an Irish man who’s been detained over suspected ticket touting in Rio.

The Brazilian newspaper Estadao reports that an Irish citizen arrested on Friday at a hotel near the Maracana stadium faces charges of illegally selling tickets at above face value for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games .

He has been refused bail and is being held at a detention centre.

Earlier: An Irish man is being detained in Rio on suspicion of ticket touting.

A search of the Irish man’s possessions has been ordered by the Judge in the case.
